Chapter 6

A Nobel Pursuit

THE STEAM CARRIAGE halted in front of the New Gate Public Works building on 26th Street. A wide stone staircase led to a massive portico held up by six stark white fluted columns. Massive brass doors provided access, and Max took little time to enter.

The stagnant smell of age immediately assaulted Max’s nostrils, and old-style gas fixtures, now converted to electric lights, hung low in the rotunda. Various employees rushed about, most dressed in dark suits and wearing toppers or Croquor felt hats. There were others there too: some tradesmen who did work in the tunnels and sewers and the occasional dutiful patron searching for the correct office to pay a bill or buy a license to serve liquor and/or lust.

Max went to the information desk. “I’m looking for Mister Highloe Barrington’s office.”

The young human female chuckled. “Mister Barrington? The director of Public Works? No one even gets close to his office without an appointment. I suggest you call next time and make one.” She turned to another person, who stepped up to the desk.

Laying his hand on her arm, Max directed her back to him. “Sister, how and who?”

She looked annoyed now. “Unhand me, you flibert! I should call security... What happened to your face? Are you sure you don’t want a constable?” She looked deep into Max’s eyes and caught her breath. She brushed off the other person and leaned in a bit toward Max. “So, you’re not half bad a looker for a masher with a busted lip. What’s your name, flibert?”

“Max Draber.”

“Well, Max, if you’re interested in how to set up a visit with Mister Barrington, I get off work in an hour, and you can buy me a snort. Maybe even lunch?”

Max stood up as tall as he could. A grin formed across his face. “Sure. Meet me at Dolly’s just down the street.”

“Mmm... Can’t wait.”

Max turned to go but stopped and turned back. He examined her name tag. “Wroandra,” he said aloud, looking into her eyes again.

“See you in an hour, Max Draber.”
